Reading fluently does not always mean reading deeply. Many students can understand individual sentences but struggle to identify main ideas, make inferences, interpret unfamiliar vocabulary, or explain their answers using evidence.

At EiFO Academy, Close Reading 1 helps students move beyond basic comprehension toward more thoughtful, independent reading. Using engaging nonfiction passages from National Geographic Reading Explorer, students explore real-world topics while developing the vocabulary, comprehension strategies, and analytical skills needed for increasingly challenging academic texts.

What Students Will Learn

Students develop essential close reading skills, including:

• Main Ideas and Supporting Details: Identify the central message of a passage and recognize the details that support it.

• Reading for Evidence: Locate relevant information in a text and use it to support answers and explanations.

Through National Geographic Reading Explorer, students encounter fascinating topics related to science, nature, history, culture, and the world around them. These readings help students expand both their academic vocabulary and background knowledge.

Small-Group Instruction

With a maximum of six students per class, teachers can encourage active participation, check individual understanding, and guide students through challenging passages.

Reading With Purpose

Students learn to look beyond the surface of a text. They practice identifying important information, asking meaningful questions, and recognizing how evidence supports an author's ideas.

From Understanding to Explaining

Knowing the correct answer is only part of strong reading comprehension. Students practice explaining their thinking and supporting their responses with specific details from the passage.
